About the Team

We comprise of a multi-disciplinary team of core staff and consultants with backgrounds in the behavioural sciences, law and human rights, and research ethics.

Catherine Slack

Catherine Slack

(MA Clin Psych, PhD) is head of HAVEG. She is interested in how best to utilize empirical data to critically reflect on ethics norms. She was a member of the National Health Research Ethics Council (NHREC) in South Africa from 2007 to 2016.

Siyabonga Thabethe

(MA) is a project researcher. His research interests are in social psychology, especially inter-group relations; as well as informed consent and stakeholder engagement for health research.



Abigail Wilkinson

(MA) is a project researcher. Her interests include Stakeholder Engagement as well as the role and functioning of RECs/ IRBs.


 

 

HAVEG members include Professors Graham Lindegger (PhD), Ann Strode (PhD) and Douglas Wassenaar (PhD) with expertise in consent, child research and RECs respectively.

HAVEG consultants include Dr Blessing Silaigwana, with expertise in REC functioning; and Professor Heidi Van Rooyen and Dr Zaynab Essack with expertise in adolescent/ youth enrolment and standards of prevention respectively.
