The
HIV Vaccine Clinical Trials Unit was established
in 2001 as part of the Perinatal HIV/AIDS Research
Unit at Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital and the
University of the Witwatersrand. It is a clinical
trial site for testing promising, appropriate
candidate vaccines in human clinical trials.
The site is fully prepared for phase I and II
studies, and is preparing for phase III studies
in various peri-urban and rural sites. This
unit receives funding from the National Institutes
of Health’s HIV Vaccine Trials
Network (HVTN), the International AIDS Vaccine
Initiative (IAVI), the European Union as part
of the AIDS Vaccine Integrated Programme (AVIP),
and the South African AIDS Vaccine Initiative
(SAAVI).
Important milestones have included joining
the HVTN as an international site; development
and implementation of vaccine preparedness work
and recruitment strategies; the submission of
two phase I protocols to the Medicines Control
Council; and, the commencement of two phase I
trials in 2003.
SAAVI funding is used for:
- Continued development of phase I/II HIV
vaccine clinical trial capacity.
- Continued support for community outreach
and education in HIV vaccine research as well
as Community Advisory Board (CAB) development
and empowerment.
- Cohort recruitment, preparation and maintenance
through the pre-screening protocol.
- Continued training and support of staff
involved in HIV vaccine-related clinical trials.
