The clinical
immunology testing is performed at the National
Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD).
The group is central to the success of testing
HIV vaccines in South Africa, as they are able
to delineate the immune responses that occur
in response to the vaccines that are injected
into humans to ascertain whether these might
protect against natural infection.
This group is a world leader in HIV vaccine
immunology and the only laboratory outside the
US to be accredited by the HIV Vaccine Trials
Network (HVTN) of the US National Institutes
of Health. The unit is involved with assessing
antibody and cellular immune responses to the
vaccines, as well as other background immunology
knowledge that is essential for assessing vaccines.
There are two core groups at the institute
involved in vaccine work.
The Cellular
Immunology Core and the Humoral Immunity Core
